The Pirate Lafitte and the Battle of New Orleans

First Scripture
This is the sort of book which can speak to ten-year-olds of the things that matter most to them: blood, honor, fear, group cohesion. For all the carefully bowdlerized children's books they fed us at school, this is the one that was engraved on our minds, telling us how the higher life could be lived.

Excellent for Young and Old
My friend has just written me about this book. I LOVED it as a 10 year old--and I loved it when I reread it a year or so after I was 40. And I plan now to buy it for my grand daughter. This is a fun and informative book. I wish more young kid books were like this.

This book is laugh-out-loud-hilarious. The first time I read this story, I was giggling so hard that I could barely speak. A very cute story for young and old alike.

Red's Great Chase
Published in Hardcover by Dutton Books (April, 1900)
Authors: Simone Lia and Meredith Mundy Wasinger
Average review score:

Delightful
This delightful book for young children includes a nice combination of simple text, colorful pictures, and child-like tension. In attempt to get away from the "scary monster", Red runs all around her house and neighborhood until she is worn out. When the monster catches Red, parents and children will smile at the surprise the beast holds.

Red Run
Simone Lia's illustrations are as spirited as Red's madcap adventure. Orange space creatures, purple monkeys, goofy townsfolk, and a blue-horned, wild-eyed monster charm the imagination of both young readers and those helping them experience this fun, high-speed tale. They also make chasing Red to the ends of the earth well worth it.

Terrific! Great! Wonderful!
One of Lorettan Chase's best! I loved this book. The charaters Amanda and Philip are great together. It may be only about 200 pages but it's still great and keeps you enthralled with the story and charaters! I recomend this book to anyone who enjoys a great romance!

Tense, gripping--could easily have been a historical
In only 220 odd pages, Loretta Chase has managed to convey the complexities of plot and emotion and characterization that are typical of a 400 page historical. Quite a feat. When I put the book down, I had to read it again. Amanda Cavencourt, at 26, seems awfully naive and trusting, but she has reason to be. And she isn't *really* like that--how else does she manage to steal the Sandalwood Princess from an accomplished thief like the Falcon? And Brentick, who really is--well, I'll let you figure it out. In any case, he is a wonderful hero. Go out and find this book along with all of Chase's regencies. They are hard to find but definitely worth the hunt.

So get you a good cup of tea, a comfy chair and get ready for a Great Read, the only sad thing is that it comes to an end.

This is a great story!
Since I live in South Carolina, I've always been interested in books set in the South. I loved reading Sea Chase. Once I started it, I found it hard to put down. As I read each word it was easy to envision every detail of this historical romance. The chemistry between the hero and heroine was intriguing and I felt as if I'd been swept back in time. I would highly recommend Sea Chase to anyone, and look forward to reading more books by this author.

The Snow Watcher

Steal this Book
Actually, that's what happened to my copy. I was going through an ugly divorce. I am a Buddhist. A friend suggested reading this book through the Hard Time. I took it to a pub, had a beer or two too many, left without the book. Realised it was left two minutes later, went back, Too late! Gone. I figure whoever nabbed it was also in need of the clarity, the crystal limning, the in-your-face reality. The best book of poetry I've read in a decade. I think I'll order another copy.

Lyrical and thoughtful synthesis of buddhism and americanism
I love the forthrightness of these poems. Chase Twichell's THE SNOW WATCHER is a book of some of the most convincing American zen poems I've ever seen. They are American in the sense that they are constantly subverting themselves, constantly questioning themselves, but at the same time they are beautiful and evocative and searching moments of clarity. There is a steady quietude that manages to peel back the layers of both the natural world and the self in a way that is both fresh and deeply historical.

The Spiral of Capitalism and Socialism: Toward Global Democracy (Power and Social Change--Studies in Political Sociology)
Published in Hardcover by Lynne Rienner Publishers (March, 2000)
Authors: Terry Boswell and Christopher Chase-Dunn
Average review score:

Spiral of Capitalism and Socialism: Toward Global Democracy
An outstanding work which argues convincingly that current problems of the globe can and must be solved in the spirit of global democracy. The authors understand global democracy as global social democracy. In a masterful syntesis of a vast array of literature they give a new meaning to the expressions "freedom from oppression" and "freedom from want". A major problem of contemporary international organizations and, indeed, of world society and the world economy is their lack of democratic input and responsibility, according to the authors. The book contains a vision of worldwide democratic socialism which is refreshingly removed from the acrimonies of the Cold War and, instead, is looking toward the future. A splendid publication.

The Spiral of Long Cycle Research
Boswell and Chase Dunn's book is an absolutely important contribution to present-day world systems research and political science in general. At breathtaking visionary power they re-interpret the course of world history since the beginnings of the capitalist world system to the revolution of 1989 and beyond. Where others speculate on the nature of the future of the international system, the authors present solid scholary knowledge, based on their own research and on that of others, masterly presented to the reader. Their vision of long Kondratieff cycles, hegemonial powers, revolutions, and the social democratic possibilities of changes will dominate the debate for many years to come. The main political conclusion of their research is: it will be up to the alternative and social democratic forces in Europe to qualitatively and quantitatively shape the chance for a transformation of the world system.

However much I disagree with one point in their analysis - the dating of the Kondratieff cycles from 1689 to 1893 (I rather do not share their Fernand Braudel and Ernest Mandel dating vision, but share Bornschier's scheme here, with the depressions around 1756,1842 and 1884), this book is one of the major contributions to world systems research in our days.

Action, Comedy and above all hope for an important species!
For the first time in history, this most ancient tiger - the South China Tiger, is brought to the consciousness of the western public through story telling. The Tiger Chase has captured the spirit of the Chinese tiger, ancestral to all other subspecies, as well as the culture associated with it. I hope that the awareness it raises would encourage the reader to join us in our fight to save this cultural symbol and protector of nature from the fate of extinction...

A Must Read!
An entertaining story about the fight for survival which is sure to raise awareness about the very real threat of extinction facing the mystical and majestic South China Tiger.

Turkish Tapestry: A Traveller's Portrait of Turkey
Published in Paperback by Bosphorus Books (December, 1993)
Author: Holly Chase
Average review score:

Fascinating Reading
While preparing for a trip to Turkey several years ago I was fortunate to come across Turkish Tapestry. From the very first page I was captivated by Ms Chase's description of everyday life in Turkey. It was exciting for me to read a book that was written by a woman who had begun her travels to Turkey as a tourist but ended up living there. This book is not your typical travel log and gives the reader insight into the Turkish people and their culture. I read the book again upon my return from Turkey and found that Ms Chase captured the true essence of this wonderful country and its people. I have since given this book to all of my friends who are traveling to Turkey and they have agreed that it is a worthwhile and enjoyable book.

Warm, wonderful tale of travel experiences in Turkey
Ms. Chase has traveled extensively in Turkey for many years, beginning as a student in the early 1970s and in the years since then. She portrays the fascinating mix of cultures, the archeology, the food and the endless variety of visual impressions with wit, vivacity and charm...I consider this book an essential preparation for anyone planning an actual visit to Turkey, and a joy to read for the vicarious experience of a trip to this colorful Near Eastern country.

The Return of Chase Cordell
Published in Paperback by Harlequin (January, 1997)
Author: Linda Lea Castle
Average review score:

A unique plot. "Sommersby" with amnesia.
The story, as described by both reviewers, is fresh and interesting. The writer has characters that really come to life and you can relate to. Very enjoyable. ( the back cover is terrible. Who can believe a war hero looks like he's 15 yrs. old?) Chase is all man, inside and out. I didn't give it a 5 because of Linese. She starts out as a delicate bride, becomes a very strong woman and then seems to beomce a whimpering, delicate lady again. Liked her better strong. The secondary characters were larger than life.

THIS IS A KEEPER -
Chase Cordell was returning home.
But who was he? Who was the beautiful stranger that was his wife.

Linese has waited 2 years for the return of her husband but who was this man with the haunted eyes. Why did he act like a stranger?

Chase lived in terror of the Cordell curse. He could remember his fathers' words "The men of the Cordell family are doomed to lose the women they love."
Dear heaven above, his wife presents him with twin daughters.

Chase wanted to stay angry with Aloyisius Cordell and the stigma of madness he lived under because of his grandfather.
But Aloyisius Cordell proved to be a shrew, calculating and crafty old fox as he played a deadly game of deception in order to help free oppressed people and runaway slaves. The ex-ranger was long on nerve and sharp as a blade.

But Chase's long delayed pride in his grandfather did not keep him from getting into some serious trouble

Great book -- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- add to your keeper shelf.

Touching, moving story
After 2 years away fighting for the North in the American Civil War, Chase Cordell has finally come home to his wife. But there is one problem, he doesn't remember her.

Linese has waited two long years for her husband to come home and when the day finally arrives she is disappointed. Her husband is withdrawn, moody, a different man. True, she didn't know him too well after their whirlwind courtship and hasty marriage, but he isn't what she expected. Prim and proper Linese goes about seducing her handsome, withdrawn husband.

Feeling like he's as mad as his crazy grandfather, Chase tries to deny his feelings for his wife. He's not worthy, doesn't deserve her and definetly doesn't remember her. But Linese has gotten under his skin and he can't deny her.

But what kind of man was Chase before the war? Was he a good man? Did he have values? Or was he a man with a past that is about to catch up with him, as Chase is just begining to realize?

The Return of Chase Cordell is a wonderful, moving and touching book of young love and rediscovering oneself. Linda Castle's writing style shines throughout, pulling the reader deeper and deeper into Chase and Linese's lives and them into our hearts. Highly recommended.
